Against Texting and Driving Laws

Against Texting and Driving Laws

Over the years, cell phones and electric handheld devices have become increasingly popular. They could be very helpful throughout the day and some people depend on them to get through their daily activities. However, these devices could also be very dangerous when using them in times where they should not be used. One of these times should be when you are driving. Texting while driving distracts a persons mind, vision, and hands. There has been conflict over the past few years over texting and driving laws. Some say there should definitely be laws banning the use of all hand held devices and some say that this would do no good.

Currently, no state completely bans the use of cell phones in cars. However, thirty states have laws limiting the use of these devices and allowing them only to be used hands free. Also, a few states have laws restricting young drivers to use a cell phone at all. These laws may help the driver to be safer or it my only cause more trouble. In my opinion, the driver might hide the cell phone more and this may cause further distraction. I have seen this happen numerous times with my friends and myself.

Even though some laws may help prevent dangerous accidents, I don’t think they would be as affective as some may believe. Like all other laws, this law could be broken easily and there is no real way to enforce it other than the police directly seeing the person. If there were a system or a detector to catch people using cellular devices in their cars similar to a speed radar then the law would be more logical. However, there is no such device yet and people are still texting and driving despite the known risks.

Some of the new laws do prevent some people form sending a text while driving but if you drive down a busy street you will see more than one person performing the task. I think the best thing to do about the situation is to make people more aware and let then know the serious risks. This will not weed out all of the people texting while driving but it will help in many ways.

  1. Although cell phones are quite useful when on the road, it is still very dangerous to text and drive. Many states have put some type of law into effect, but it doesn't stop many people from texting while driving. Many teenagers still continue this bad habit and law enforcements should work harder to prevent people from doing this. It would make our roads much safer for people to travel to and from their destination.

  2. I am not going to act like I have never do this but I am getting better. Texting and driving can become dangerous and harmful to others. When someone is texting and driving they are not paying full attention on the road. This is why if I do text and drive I do it at a stop light or sign. Something that is a little annoying to me about the inforcement of this law is that some cops are guilty of it to. Im not saying that all cops are but recently is saw a cop driving and he was facebooking on his laptop which is alot worse the texting because you need to use both hands and then he decided to pull someone over. Although not all cops do this I have been seeing it more frequently lately. I think that if people would just worry about driving that the road would be a much safer place.

  3. Texting and driving is very dangerous because when you are texting you are not paying attention to the road. And while texting you can cause a serious wreck. even though the use of a cellphone is helpful when getting direction, you should pull over to the side and get whatever it is to keep from causing or getting into an accident. Even if the government makes a law banning texting while driving it will not help, it will just make people want to text even more because they know there will be consequences behind texting.

  4. I have to agree with you on this! I know that texting while driving is dangerous; however, at this time there is no great way to prevent it. It definitely doesn't stop me from doing it. I actually facebook and drive a lot, so I'm sure that's even more dangerous. If they had cameras to catch people in the act they would also be useless. I think, in order to create a greater sense of awareness, there needs to be graphic videos that show reveal the deadly combination of texting and driving, shown to everyone who texts and drives as a preventative matter.
